A public inquiry has been launched into why Powys County Council refused to grant planning permission for a 1,000-cow dairy farm in Wales.

The application to expand an existing dairy near Welshpool was originally submitted in 2010, by farmer Fraser Jones.

Although the plans met with considerable local and national opposition, in November 2011, Powys Council’s planning committee said it was minded to approve the application subject to a further report on several outstanding issues. However, last October, it refused permission.

The Planning Inspectorate-run inquiry launched on Tuesday (5 March) and is expected to last eight days.
