Waitrose claimed a first this week when it began selling fair trade apples. The South African fair trade Granny Smiths are on sale throughout the retailer’s estate, priced at £1.79/bag of six fruit.
The apples, described as firm with a “smooth clean green skin and an occasional pink blush of the cheeks”, will be on sale until the end of September. The fruit is grown for Waitrose on the Vuki Trust farm in the Grabouw region of South Africa.
Last week, Waitrose pledged to donate 20% of its profits from the sale of South African citrus fruit to the communities where the fruit is grown.
