Marks and Spencer will be selling 150 tonnes of Naturiane- branded apples Ariane and Doriane from December.
The French varieties were unveiled at the Sial food show in Paris by SAS Pomalia, which represents growers, breeders and distributors.
This season’s harvest is an estimated 830 tonnes. By 2007 this is forecast to rise to 9,000 tonnes, while long-term predictions suggest annual yields of 25,000 tonnes.
A E100,000 marketing budget will underpin the launch this season, funded by members of the Pomalia club. A 2005-6 marketing budget will come from a levy on growers based on the weight of fruit sold.
Retailers throughout Europe will be offered marketing support for the apples, including in-store tastings. There are also plans to develop branded packs, with UK consumers a key target.
Pomalia, which developed the fruit in conjunction with French scientists, said the apples need less spraying treatments than other varieties.
