British wine consumers could be blessed by the ‘Hand of God’ should Raices de Agrelo find a wine distributor in the UK.
The Argentine winemaker has launched a range of five red wines branded Diego Armando Maradona - one of the world’s greatest footballers and infamous for scoring a goal with his hand against England in the 1986 World Cup.
As well being adorned with the name of the Argentine footballing genius, each bottle carries a photograph of Maradona - albeit of a younger Diego - his signature and number 10 shirt, and a seal with a picture of a football.
The red wine range comprises three Premium blends - Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah & Malbec; Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah; and a single varietal Malbec (all 2003), as well as two Classico wines - Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec (both 2002).
Raices de Agrelo’s Fernando Córdoba said he was unsure if the Maradona wines would receive the same warm reception in England as they do in Argentina.
Raices de Agrelo has also produced a range of wines under the name of the former Columbian international footballer Carlos Valderrama.
Meanwhile, another football legend was causing a stir with his own branded coffee.
Produced by Brazilian coffee company Cacique, Café Pelé is sold in 59 countries with marketing activity supported by Pelé. Cacique has no immediate plans to launch Café Pelé in this country.
