Aldi took home the Grocer of the Year award for the second year running at the 2014 Grocer Gold Awards last night.
The discounter beat the big four supermarkets to the top prize at a glitzy event at London’s Guildhall, hosted by Green Wing and Episodes star Stephen Mangan.
Asda won The Grocer 33 Price award for the 17th year running, as well as picking up the award for Britain’s Favourite Supermarket – the only prize of the night voted for by a panel of consumers, in association with Nielsen.

Sainsbury’s, which reported its first-quarter results today, took home The Grocer 33 Customer Service award and Availability award, as well as Green Retailer of the Year.
Tesco claimed the title of Online Retailer of the Year, and won Own-Label Range of the Year for Tesco Finest, which last month swept the board at The Grocer Own Label Awards. Tesco’s action on tackling sugary drinks also won it Business Initiative of the Year Award.
There was also success for Waitrose, which took the Store Manager of the Award for its Cheltenham Food & Home store, managed by Mike Snowdon.
In a hotly contested category, Heineken walked away with Branded Supplier of the Year Award. Meanwhile Müller won Brand of the Year.
JJ Food Service won Wholesaler of the Year, breaking the dominance of Booker, which took home Green Wholesaler of the Year.
Elsewhere, Coca-Cola Enterprises’ hit Share A Coke campaign took the prize for Consumer Initiative of the Year, and Defra secretary of state Owen Paterson presented the award for Exporter of the Year to The Ice Co.
