Champion: Zotefoams – Rezorce

Composite layered materials mean the majority of liquid packaging board drinks cartons currently end up incinerated or in landfill, rather than at recycling plants.

With its Rezorce packs, Zotefoams is looking to change that. The manufacturer uses microcellular foaming technology, first developed at MIT in the 1970s, to create a solid outer ‘skin’ and foamed layers in the core, but with only a single material required, HPDE. This simplifies recycling and allows the carton to be sorted via standard recovery facilities.

And to facilitate its adoption, the carton is also compatible with manufacturers’ existing print and packaging machinery. “It’s an excellent way of getting the public to recycle,” agreed our judges. An “implementable innovation to solve problems of composite carbon board without disrupting manufacturing, distribution or retail norms.”
