Meat, Poultry and Eggs
By Kevin White Kevin.White@thegrocer.co.uk

The era of so-called cheap meat appears to be over. British farmers have since last year been facing soaring input costs that are filtering through to supermarkets. How have these rises affected prices paid by consumers for steak, sausages and other meat products? What can the industry do to mitigate these costs? And what could entice shoppers to spend on meat despite an economic crisis that has seen inflation soar and the government forced to pledge billions to offset devastating fuel price rises?

Trade deals: Although the government has postponed implementing most post-Brexit checks on imports of meat from the EU, how are costs and prices being affected by changes related to the UK’s departure from the bloc and follow-on trade deals?

Sustainability: Meat producers are facing allegations around the environmental impact of farming. Are the accusations valid? Are producers working to address the claims?

Health: There are assumptions doing the rounds that consumers have become more health-conscious in the wake of the Covid pandemic  - true or not and has there been any impact on meat consumption?

Eggs: An overview of how egg suppliers are faring after the bird flu crisis and impact of input cost rises, notably feed and energy.

Innovations: We will profile 4 new products or ranges that ideally have not appeared in The Grocer. Must include launch date, rsp, and a hi-res picture.

Fish

The fallout from the Russia-Ukraine war has hit the fishing industry, with the UK imposing a retaliatory tariff on imports of Russian whitefish and the US banning Moscow’s seafood. How are these measures - rare sanctions against Russia’s mammoth food commodity exporting industries - affecting the sector? Which stocks are most affected in terms of pricing and availability? And how are UK suppliers, producers and retailers coping, with fuel, electrictity and other input costs soaring and consumer inflation also squeezing demand? Some fish prices have continued to rise in the months since the war started - but are products and ranges changing also?
