The price of a full English breakfast is almost 20% higher than a year ago, largely driven by the price of eggs, hash browns and baked beans.

Almost every item has seen double-digit inflation, according to an average taken across the major supermarkets using Assosia data.

Eggs are up by an average of 41% for a pack of six free-range across the major supermarkets.

Eggs have faced a number of price pressures over the past year, including outbreaks of avian flu and soaring production costs. At Iceland, prices are up most with a pack of 15 eggs 85% more expensive year on year.

Hash browns and baked beans are also fuelling the extra cost. Hash browns saw an average increase of 37% this year, while a tin of Heinz baked beans is up 32%.

Heinz drove through hundreds of price increases across every supermarket in January, and pointed to a rise in tomato prices, as well as soaring energy costs.

A Hovis loaf is up 27% on average wiith bread prices rising across the board with the cost flour and gas putting pressure on the energy-intensive industry.

Only a few products escaped the rampant inflation seen in the rest of the basket. Unsmoked back bacon went up by just 1p on average, while mushrooms crept up by just 3%.

The full English breakfast basket included Hovis white bread, Yorkshire tea, Heinz baked beans, own-label sausages, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and bacon. The basket also included either branded or own label hash browns and black pudding, whichever was cheaper.
