Growth in instant coffee has been driven by promotions, with 47% of volume sold on deal. Coupled with this, the ongoing premiumisation of the market has led to the average household spending £1.40 more this year.

The roast & ground coffee sector is performing strongly, due to rising purchase frequency. Roast & ground shoppers are 40% more likely than buyers of instant to live in London.

Despite a slight decline in volume, the standard tea market grew by nearly 8% last year, driven by an increase in price.

Price increases are behind much of the growth of the fruit & herbal sector. 63% of spend comes from the socio-economic group ABC1, making it the most upmarket sector of hot drinks. l Only one in four shoppers buys both hot chocolate and malted drinks.
