UK consumers have long been familiar with the widget - the in-can device popularised by Guinness - that creates a draught-style head on a can of beer. The device has also appeared in the canned coffee market, with Kenco Cappio iced cappuccino featuring the ‘froth top system’.
Now it appears that in-can devices are taking a new turn. Brain-Twist Beverages of New York is launching a dietary supplement drink, Defense Effervescent Supplement, with the FreshCan delivery system. This comprises a small unit that floats inside the can, containing vitamins and minerals. When the can is opened using the regular ringpull tab, the device is activated to effervesce and release the nutrients into the drink.
According to the on-pack copy, the longer vitamins and minerals sit in liquid, the weaker they become. This new package, however, keeps the vitamins and the drink separate until it is consumed. In this particular example the device delivers vitamins, zinc, calcium and throat-soothing pectin, to help maintain a healthy immune system, in a natural orange flavoured drink.
At first glance, the pack looks like any other tall, aluminium can, but a panel on the back explains how the package functions with the line ‘Clink, clink, clink… the sound you’re hearing when you shake this can…’
This particular type of in-can device has been developed to deliver these particular added nutrients but the device could presumably also be used to add colour, flavour, or some other benefit to any canned beverage, in a way that allows consumers to see and hear it happening, right in front of their very eyes.
The FreshCan system has been developed by Degussa Food Ingredients and Ball Corporation.
The newcomer will be on sale in the US in September through 7-Eleven stores, and is expected to retail at around $2.49 per 444ml can.
