Golden Wonder is stepping up its fightback against arch rival Walkers by bringing out its own range of premium crisps called Golden Skins.
It is also putting two of its more successful lines, Nik Naks and Wheat Crunches, into single-serve pots. And it is bringing back 1970s favourite Ringos after being lobbied by a Lancashire postman who drew up a 12,000 signature petition.
The fightback begins next month with thick-cut Golden Skins rolling out in Loaded Cheese, Mexican Chilli & Cheese and Pepperoni & Cheese flavours in a move that will pitch Golden Wonder into the fierce premium sector against Walker’s Sensations and Kettle Chips.
However, the company insisted Skins were significantly different enough to offer a point of difference in the market. They will be available in 45g single and 150g flat-bottomed sharing bags at rsps of 45p and £1.19 respectively.
Snack pots of Wheat Crunchies (55g) and Nik Naks (50g) will be available from September at a rsp of 69p. Meanwhile, postie Steve Marriot is celebrating after his campaign to bring back Ringos, axed in the early 1990s, was given the stamp of approval by Golden Wonder. Price-marked 20p packs will be available in salt & vinegar, pickled onion and cheese & onion flavours from next month.
Sales director Peter Fazal said Ringos’ reprieve proved the company listened to customers.
He added: “We are continuing to drive the market with category and packaging innovation and are responding to consumer demand with the reintroduction of Ringos. We are also continuing our work with retailers and constantly striving to increase the profitability and variety of the snacks fixture.”
