Irish dairy giant Glanbia has confirmed it is in talks with one of the UK’s leading milk co-operatives. In a statement, Glanbia played down talk of a takeover of Milk Link, but said it was “discussing potential opportunities for partnership in serving the UK cheese market”.

Both companies said the talks were ongoing and as yet no conclusions had been reached.

However, Glanbia said it was committed to continuing to have an ongoing role in the UK cheese sector, whatever the outcome of the discussions.

Jon Arnold, buying manager, said: “We have seen double- digit growth on both free range
and organic over the last year.”

Tom Vesey, BFREPA chairman, said: “It’s because of commitment from companies like Sainsbury that millions of hens enjoy a free range lifestyle.”
