Heinz is rolling its Baked Beanz brand into fresh sausages as it continues its assault on the chilled sector.
The new sausages, branded Heinz Pork & Baked Bean Sausages, are being made under licence by sausage specialist Manor Born and represent Heinz Baked Beanz’s first foray into the chilled fixture.
Each 400g pack contains six baked bean-stuffed pork sausages and, according to the ingredients panel, the sausages contain 28% baked beans.
The new offering can be grilled, shallow fried or oven cooked and contains 50% less fat than standard sausages, said Heinz.
Matt Walker, brand manager for the newcomer, said: “It is the first move for Heinz Baked Beanz into the chilled sector. Baked beans have a natural fit with sausages as a host food and Heinz Pork & Baked Bean Sausages bring the two together in a way that only Heinz can.”
A 400g pack will retail at £1.79, but it is currently being sold in Tesco at a launch price of £1.39.
The new fresh sausages form part of Heinz’s strategy to increase its presence in the chiller. Back in October, Steven Turner, commercial director for Heinz chilled foods, told The Grocer that the company planned to ramp up its chilled offerings (October 16, p72).
Since then it has introduced Pasta Shakers, revamped its sandwich range and last week The Grocer revealed how the grocery giant was testing its first range of chilled soups in Tesco.
