Boddingtons’ famous Strangeways brewery in Manchester will shut down this afternoon after 227 years, despite a campaign by the Transport and General Workers Union to save it.

The closure follows brand owner Interbrew’s decision to switch production of Boddingtons to its other operations in Preston, Glasgow and Newport in South Wales.

Franny Joyce, the T&G’s Manchester-based regional industrial organiser said it was a poignant moment in the city’s history but also a betrayal of the workforce and consumers.
