Routine tail docking in pigs is rarely being prosecuted

A report by the think-tank the Social Market Foundation has found just 2.3% of all animal welfare breaches in the UK are being prosecuted. That’s despite one in three farming inspections identifying a breach. The findings showed “a concerning lack of surveillance and an apparent reluctance to enforce existing laws”, said charity Animal Equality UK (Financial Times).

A nightmare growing season for pumpkin growers has led to the emergence of green-tinged pumpkins ahead of Halloween, reports The Guardian. A cold, wet spring and a resulting “slug army” have wreaked havoc on harvests, although shortages are not expected in the mults in the run-up to Halloween.

TikTok is fuelling a surge in people returning clothes ordered online, with so-called “serial returners” sending back almost £7bn of items a year, says The Telegraph. Over two-thirds of Gen Z shoppers admit to deliberately over-ordering with a view to returning items, it reports. Online returns are forecast to exceed £27bn this year, according to Retail Economics – a trend that is leaving high street stores facing a glut of unwanted clothes.
