A Morrisons supplier has been fined £30,000 for employing six illegal workers in the latest round of UK Borders Agency action.

Three Pakistani men and three Malaysian women were arrested after 20 UKBA officers stormed the Maysum samosa factory in Beeston, Leeds, last month.

Maysum said it was appealing the penalty and had conducted the right checks of the workers' documents. "There are substantial and meritorious grounds in support of the proposed appeal," said the company's solicitors.

A Morrisons spokesman confirmed Maysum would still supply it. "We source all our products from reputable suppliers," he added.

Immigration minister Damian Green vowed to step up efforts to stop immigration crime following a summer crackdown on illegal labour. "Illegal immigration puts huge pressure on the public purse," he said.
