Morrisons has appointed Norman Pickavance to the role of group HR director.

The position was created following chief executive Marc Bolland's extensive review of the business, which set out plans to create a team of eight senior executives at the top of the organisation.

Pickavance is the seventh director to be appointed, and the company is currently searching for a marketing and communications director to complete the team.

He joins Morrisons from Northern Foods where he was also group HR director. Last year Pickavance worked with union Usdaw to draw up a learning agreement enabling Northern Foods employees to broaden their skills. It is this experience of staff development, which is thought to have secured Pickavance the new role.

Morrisons has had on-going problems with staff turnover and Bolland has made it a priority to improve loyalty, developing a strategy involving improved training, development and performance evaluation.

Pickavance will join Morrisons on 2 July.
