Name: Liz Doherty

Was: Chief finance director at Reckitt Benckiser

Now: Non-executive director at Dunelm, Nokia and Delhaize

Career background: Doherty kicked off her career at Unilever in 1979 as an auditor - a role she held for four years. But she actually spent two decades at the fmcg giant, holding various international roles in Thailand and Spain. She followed with a six-year stint at Tesco as group international finance director, which ended in November 2007. She helped oversee the retailer’s move into the US with Fresh & Easy. Next up, the financial globetrotter joined Australian supply chain specialist Brambles as group CFO in December 2007 - a role that lasted two years - before being appointed CFO at Reckitt Benckiser in 2010.

Controversy: Consumer goods giant Reckitt Benckiser parted ways with Doherty after two years under controversial circumstances. Chief executive Rakesh Kapoor released a statement last September to the Stock Exchange claiming Doherty was set to leave due to her working methods not being “well matched” to the business.

What is she doing now? Doherty was appointed non-exec director of Dunelm in May. At the time, chairman Geoff Cooper said: “The broad operational experience of Liz and strong track record across a number of international retail and consumer businesses make her an ideal addition.”

What’s next? Doherty will be hoping to continue the good progress at Dunelm after the homeware retailer posted a 12.3% rise in pre-tax profits to £108.1m for the year to 29 June. It will also be interesting to see if her international expertise influences the board of Nokia. The telecoms giant, which has sold its phone business to Microsoft, posted a 33% fall in operating profits for its now primary telecoms solutions and networks business in Q3 of 2013.
