Waitrose has appointed Barry Dick as its new beer, wine and spirit bulk sourcing manager.
Dick, who holds a Master of Wine qualification, is set to join the grocer’s team at the end of January.
As part of his role within the drinks buying team, he will respond to Waitrose’s head of beers, ciders, wines, spirits & soft drinks at Waitrose, Pierpaolo Petrassi.
This newly created role would focus on managing the global importation and UK packing of wines and spirits, it said.
“We are delighted to welcome Barry to our team,” Petrassi said. “This new role is a fantastic opportunity for us to increase our capability to import bulk wines & spirits and package them here in the UK, further building on our sustainability credentials.
“Barry’s extensive experience and knowledge in packaging, importation of wines and spirits, as well as his passion for sustainability, will make him an invaluable addition to the team.”
Dick, who has specialised in UK packaging, has worked as a consultant in the wine industry for several years.
Throughout his career, he has advised a number of retailers and wine brands. He also worked as a winemaker for Sainsbury’s from 2005 to 2011.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in food science, a master’s degree in European food marketing, and a postgraduate qualification in oenology.
Dick has also completed several vintages in California, the Languedoc and Australia, and officially became a Master of Wine in 2013.
