Cassandra Stavrou
Co-founder, Propercorn, on playlists, Labyrinth, and her aversion to ketchup
What was your first-ever job? I used to run student club nights at university… it helped keep me out of too much debt, though probably wasn’t the wisest decision with regards to my degree.
What’s been your worst job interview? I haven’t really had many, as I have always been entrepreneurial and wanted to work for myself.
What was the first music single you bought? Jump by Kriss Kross.
How do you describe your job to your mates? I run a popcorn business, it always comes across as a little random… it certainly took a while for my granny in Cyprus to get her head around it.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? The team - it is without doubt one of the things we are most proud of. There is a wonderful atmosphere in the office.
What is the least rewarding part? I love what I do and wouldn’t change it.
What is your motto? Trust your instincts and always strive to be kind.
If you were allowed one dream perk, what would it be? A dedicated masseuse would be incredible.
Do you have any phobias? I have a very odd aversion to ketchup! I haven’t touched it since I was six when I got it all over me in McDonald’s and was sick.
If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? It’s a pretty exciting category, there is lots of innovation and interesting start-ups, though it can sometimes be a struggle to compete against the bigger boys.
What luxury would you have on a desert island? A way of playing music. I have a different playlist for every mood.
What animal most reflects your personality? A meerkat! Excitable, curious and loves being around people.
What’s your favourite film and why? Labyrinth starring David Bowie is fantastic and it reminds me of being a child. I was mesmerised and scared by it at the same time.
What was the most embarrassing moment in your life? I once did a promo job at a gambling conference, flyering for secondhand slot machines. I was asked to wear the most unforgiving outfit with the words “refurbished slot” down my body - I cried!
Which celebrity would you most like to work with? I would like David Hockney to create our next pack design.
