What was your first-ever job? I’ve always had a really strong work ethic and worked from a young age. When I was 12, I sold craft items on the beaches in the Seychelles to tourists. I started my first proper job when I was 15, in a hotel restaurant as a pot washer.
What’s been your worst job interview? I had an interview with the BBC as an audio engineer. This was right after I’d graduated from university. I was only 20, fresh out of my studies and I really wasn’t prepared. Safe to say, it was the longest 30 minutes of my life and I didn’t get the job!
What was the first music single you ever bought?Marvin Gaye - Let’s Get It On.
How do you describe your job to your mates? It’s busy, hard work, but extremely rewarding.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?Seeing my products on the shelves of the supermarkets. I initially sold my sauces at farmers’ markets in the North West, so it’s a real buzz to see Island Cuisine in two of the big five now.
What is your motto? Good things come to those who don’t wait!
If you were allowed one dream perk what would it be? I would have my own private jet, so I could take buyers on trips to the Seychelles.
What’s your favourite movie and why? The Blind Side - it’s a real feelgood film about overcoming adversity.
What has been the most embarrassing moment of your life? It involved a dance routine to MC Hammer’s U Can’t Touch This, a group of screaming girls and a pair of split pants. I was only 12, but it still haunts me.
If you could pick a celebrity to join your staff who would it be and why? Jay-Z, as he’s an extremely positive guy with a great get-up-and-go attitude. Plus, he’s one hell of a businessman!
If you could change one thing in grocery what would it be? I’d like it to be easier for smaller brands to get in front of buyers. It’s really important that these individuals get their chance to shine. It can sometimes feel like an uphill battle when you’re competing with household names.
What luxury would you have on your desert island? My iPod.
What animal best reflects your personality? A seal - they’re a really calm animal and adaptable to their surroundings.
