Josefin Deckel
Co-founder of SugarSin, on superglue, sweets and being stubborn
What was your first-ever job? Knocking on doors selling superglue. I tried to boost sales by using my fingertips to demonstrate the glue’s strength. Not something I’d recommend!
What was the first music single you bought? Mariah Carey’s version of Without You. I didn’t know her name back then so my nan and I had to listen through a lot of crooners before finding the song.
How do you describe your job to your mates? I’m trying to convince the UK people that sweets are not just for children.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job? It’s definitely the happiness I see in our customers and the ability to continuously work to create an inspiring team.
What’s the least rewarding part? I try to not view any of my work as unrewarding. I try to find use in all the hardship and turn it into a positive strength.
What’s your motto? Be yourself, love yourself and do the best you can.
What’s your nickname? It’s Jo, or nowadays my friends call me Candy Jo.
If you were allowed one dream perk what would it be? I wouldn’t mind a peek of tomorrow’s lottery numbers!
What’s your favourite movie? Why? I have many but Forrest Gump is always among the top three. It has such an amazing storyline - portraying life’s beauty and sorrow with so much inspiration and beauty.
What’s been the most embarrassing moment in your life? Once at a previous job I sent an important parcel to Hong Kong. The problem was that I stated Japan as the country. I know, don’t judge.
Do you have any phobias? Just recently I found out there’s a name for my phobia: trypophobia [a phobia of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps].
If you could pick a celebrity to join your staff who would it be? Mila Kunis - she seems fun and down to earth. Just the type of person we’re looking for at SugarSin.
If you could change one thing in the grocery industry what would it be? More really good sweets, please!
What luxury would you have on your desert island? I’d love to have a set navigator.
What animal best reflects your personality? I’ve always been told I’m an ox: strong, determined and stubborn.
