What was your first-ever job? Straight out of school I took a car mechanic apprenticeship. It has proven to be very useful.
What was your worst job interview? It has to be 18 years ago in front of my father (and founder of John Ross Jr). It was a real life lesson. However, I did get a second interview.
What was the first music single you bought? Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
How do you describe your job to your mates? I don’t - they’re not interested. However they do take great pleasure in placing bets on how long it takes me to ask the chef “who supplies your smoked salmon?” whenever we go out to eat.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Winning a new contract and opening a menu to read how a restaurant or hotel is so proud to serve our salmon that they credit us on the menu.
What is the least rewarding part? That adverse weather can have such a huge impact on logistics.
What is your motto? Work hard, play hard.
What’s your nickname? Puffin.
If you were allowed one dream perk what would it be? A Learjet so I could head off snowboarding every weekend.
What’s your favourite movie and why? The Art of Flight. Even people without an interest in snowboarding can’t fail to be taken on an amazing journey.
What’s been the most embarrassing moment in your life? Recently, while on the phone. I mistook a male for a female - and probably sounded too shocked when the penny finally dropped, by which time he knew what I had been thinking.
If you could pick a celebrity to join your staff who would it be and why? Jamie Oliver. He cares about good food and understands what skill and effort it takes to make a top product.
If you could change one thing in grocery what would it be? The grocery industry recognises quality over price, so there’s nothing in particular we would change.
What luxury would you have on your desert island? A catamaran (ready once I’ve landed on my Learjet, of course).
What animal best reflects your personality and why? An online questionnaire recently revealed that it’s a wolf - for its strength, wit and an ability to hunt. I’m not going to disagree with that.
