Paul Killoughery
Managing director, Bio Collectors, on Fleetwood Mac, David Attenborough and getting to know horses
What was your first-ever job? I worked at KPMG for four years and qualified as a chartered accountant - then left a month later!
What was the first music you bought? It was Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, and I think the songs sound just as good today as I did back then.
How do you describe your job to your mates? My son told his school friends his dad was a “bin man”. The title has stuck.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Transforming waste into energy that we all need and making a fertiliser for farmers - it’s a win-win situation for all.
What is the least rewarding part of your job? Dealing with the all the red tape.
What is your motto in life? We are judged on how we find solutions to problems.
If you were allowed one dream perk what would it be? I’d love two season tickets for Chelsea, one for me and one for my son.
Do you have any phobias? I don’t really like heights. When I was in house building, scaling the scaffolding was hard!
If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? I’d want to make sure all unavoidable food waste was segregated so that it would have to be diverted from landfill and incineration disposal methods.
What luxury would you have on a desert island? A never-ending beer tap, magically kept cold.
What animal most reflects your personality? A horse - they are difficult to get to know well. However, when you get to know a horse well, it is worth the effort.
What’s your favourite film and why? I like Up, the animated movie. I’ve seen it twice and thought it was a great, enriching, positive story and surprisingly moving.
What has been the most embarrassing moment of your life? Not long ago I went up to somebody at an awards ceremony, mistaking him for someone else. He even asked: “Do I know you?” I said: “Yes, of course!” and enthusiastically carried on. I was convinced until I bumped into the actual person I was looking for later on that evening.
Which celebrity would you most like to work with and why? David Attenborough. He is so knowledgeable and calm. If he said something, people would do it.
