Tom Redwood, founder and chef, Babease, on shaking up babyfood, doing his best and meeting Simon Rogan
What was your first job? Getting up at 4am for the early cleaning shift at my local convenience store.
What’s been your worst job interview? I’ve been lucky; working with food is my passion as well as my day job. Now, experiencing the interview process from the other side, I realise how easily I got away with it.
What was the first music single you bought? I didn’t buy singles, but my first record was ‘The Hits Album 1990’. My brother, sister and I played it to death.
How do you describe your job to your mates? My mission is to shake up the babyfood industry. I want to make babyfood tastier and healthier, one aisle at a time.
What is the most rewarding part of your job? Having an impact on the industry and the way parents see and interact with babyfood.
What is the least rewarding part? Budgeting and planning. I’ve had to very quickly learn the importance of detail.
What is your motto? ‘Do your best’ - my dad used to say this. Put everything you have into something and you’ll be amazed by what you achieve.
If you were allowed one dream perk, what would it be? An invite to all the top chef’s tables in the world - one at a time!
Do you have any phobias? Needles.
If you could change one thing in grocery, what would it be? I’d like there to be an easier way to get messages to category decision-makers.
What luxury would you have on a desert island? A Michelin-starred restaurant.
What animal most reflects your personality? My mum would say a monkey. I was very cheeky as a kid.
What’s your favourite film? I love any swashbuckling ‘switch off’ movie. Action combined with a sword fight or two is a winning combination.
Which celebrity would you most like to work with and why? Simon Rogan; I had the pleasure of recently meeting him when I took the team to Fera at Claridge’s. It was amazing. He has a great deal of skill in the kitchen and I admire his determination.
What would your death row meal be? An authentic green Thai curry with jasmine rice packed full of morning glory with fiery chilli and aromatic Thai basil.
