Somerfield and its largest cheese supplier Glanbia have struck a deal to pay an extra £200/tonne for all cheese produced from November 1. Somerfield stressed the increase was a long-term agreement.
First Milk said its prices to farmers for milk would increase by 1.1p to just over 17p per litre. This is well short of the 2p a litre offered recently by supermarkets because much of the milk is sold into markets which have yet to match the multiples' increases.

n milk slips back
October milk deliveries to dairies across the UK were only marginally higher than a year ago, according to the Rural Payments Agency.
The 0.2% increase was well below the average monthly increase of 2.5% in the previous six months. Weekly figures show deliveries over 4% lower at the end of October than at the beginning. October is so far the lowest month this year for UK milk production.
n goats for longer
Goats milk is set to get a longer shelf life thanks to new packaging. One of the UK's leading suppliers of goats milk, Delamere Dairy, is using specialised packaging from Tetra Pak.
The Tetra Rex Extended Shelf Life cartons help improve the life of the product by 21 days.

n bogofs on ham
Canned ham promotions timed for the pre Christmas period start next week at prices similar to last year in spite of a firmer euro. The traditional pear shaped 454g is likely to be under £1 a can either through bogofs or price discount.
Stewed steak sales increase at this time of the year, although some shipment delays from Brazil a couple of months ago have resulted in delayed promotional activity.

n china's hand
Spanish canners are expected to announce new season's mandarin orange prices next week following quotes already circulating from Chinese suppliers.
Last season China was very competitive in Germany, taking pre-season contracts normally serviced by Spain. Rumours of short deliveries by China were rife, but facts were difficult to establish. Some Spanish deals concluded later in the season, suggesting late covering by German buyers to fulfil contracts.

n organic in a can
UK company Hawkwood has produced a canned citrus salad which complies with EU organic standards. The orange and grapefruit segments are peeled by hand, doing away with the need for caustic soda. The work is carried out for Hawkwood by its Turkish supplier Mercedes Tallo.
