European poultry producers will receive £34-£45m in emergency bird flu aid, as Brussels attempts to bolster EU prices following the outbreaks earlier this year.
Agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer-Boel said: "I believe our proposals will give farmers the flexibility to adjust their production to the market situation. I am against aid for private storage and the destruction of stocks of meat."
The UK has not yet applied for aid, but 14 countries including Italy, France and Germany have. The money is aimed at egg and chick destruction and reduction of output to reduce the glut of unwanted meat.
