? England could face a shortage of strawberries and cream because of a lack of foreign fruit pickers, claims The Mirror. The traditional summer treat is under threat because the usual harvest-time influx of EU workers has begun to dry up. ? The Daily Mail reckons the government has covert plans to encourage the nation to give up meat and go vegetarian. It said a leaked email from the Environment Agency to a vegetarian campaign group expressed sympathy for the environmental benefits of a mass switch to a vegan diet. "The potential benefit in terms of climate impact could be very significant," the paper reported the email as saying. ? The FT ran with the story that private equity firms KKR and CVC Asia Pacific have walked away from a consortium set to bid for Australian retailer Coles. It said the companies unexpectedly left the consortium after examining Coles' accounts during the two-week due diligence procedure. The remaining members were considering whether to remain in the bidding consortium, it said. ? A ban on calling fruit and veg imported by air 'organic' could lower the living standards of farmers in developing countries, according to The Independent. The paper said a ban on air-freighted organic food would help climate change, but damage exporters, and the Soil Association was consulting on whether it was acceptable to import organic food from far-flung countries. ? The Times led with a story claiming that Tesco has been selling ordinary chicken as 'corn fed'. Just a week after the Whistleblower programme provoked public outrage over meat being sold after its sell-by date at a Tesco and a Sainsbury's store, it cited studies carried out for the paper by government scientists that found that birds from the Tesco's Finest range had not consumed enough maize to justify being labelled as corn fed.
