Thieves have made off with more than £80,000 worth of wine from a Sussex winery.
Bolney Wine Estate said the culprits had stolen almost 5,000 bottles from its warehouse at the estate near Haywards Heath, West Sussex.
The wine, which was destined for Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and independent retailers, included 540 bottles of International Wine & Spirits Competition-winning Blanc de Blanc 2009, as well as Cuvée Rosé, Bolney Bubbly, Sirrius Rosé, Lychgate White and Linter’s Red.
One of England’s oldest wine estates, Bolney began in 1972 as Bookers Vineyard with just three acres of vines. It now plants an area 13 times that size.
“We are understandably upset and frustrated by the loss of such a large amount of wine, as we work incredibly hard here at Bolney Wine Estate to produce top-quality English wines,” said head winemaker and MD Samantha Linter.
