Expert's verdict:9/10
? This is a traditional beer with a difference - zesty, refreshing and satisfying. Top marks for Greene King on innovation and managing to capture the summer trend of fruit-based drinks. Ruddles Rhubarb delivers on all fronts for me, with a great, quirky delivery, fantastic packaging and a competitive price point of £1.69. With an industry award already to its name this product is sure to do well with the real ale drinker.

?The ale has a very striking flavour that is fruity and hoppy. The rhubarb flavour definitely comes through and it has a hint of fennel. It has an attractive russet colour, with a gleam in the glass. The packaging is strong and the purple colour of the label is good, reflecting the rhubarb. I would buy it again, though it wouldn't be an ale that I would drink everyday. It's a good speciality beer that is suitable for all seasons - warming for the winter and pleasant if it is chilled in the summer. My wife tried it and she also liked it.

A year down the line... Bud Silver Company: Anheuser-Busch Launch price: £3.99 per four-pack Today's price: N/A Acid test verdict: 4 stars
Anheuser-Busch decided to withdraw Bud Silver from UK distribution in April this year, following the national launch in July 2006. It was developed as a European-style beer with a full flavour and launched exclusively for the UK, aimed at 18 to 40 year-old males for mid-week drinking occasions. It gained distribution in all major UK supermarkets and was supported by a poster, radio and outdoor campaign. Despite this, sales have failed to meet expectations, the company said.
