A South African brandy called African Spear has arrived on UK shores to capitalise on the popularity of Cognac.
"Sales of Cognac have risen from 130 million bottles a year at the end of the 1990s to 157 million today," said James Rackham, founder of Emporia Brands, which is importing the brandy.
"Demand is high and although production has been increased it won't come to market until 2010. This has opened the gate for South Africa, which makes high- quality, well-priced brandies."
African Spear is produced from Chenin Blanc and Colombard grapes. It will retail for £10.99 for a 70cl bottle.
