Frozen vegetable specialist Northumberland Foods has gone out of business.

Two hundred and fifty jobs have been lost as a result of the Morpeth-based company’s failure. Administrators were called in last week but were unable to complete a sale despite “advanced negotiations… with a potential purchaser”.

Earlier this year the company agreed a tie-up with Ainsley Harriott to front a new range of branded frozen potato products.

“Though the company was loss-making and facing cash-flow problems, we have been working hard to secure a sale to an interested party that would have rescued the company and saved the entire workforce,” said the administrator, Begbies Traynor.

“This has not proved possible, with negotiations failing at the eleventh hour.

“Given the lack of interested parties and the company’s substantial funding requirement in order to continue trading, we have been left with no alternative but for the company to cease trading immediately.”
