Aldi donated 550,000 meals to charities across the UK over the Christmas period, benefiting more than 700 causes, according to the discounter.
The supermarket partnered with local charitable groups to redistribute unsold fresh and chilled food after stores closed on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, helping it meet its pledge to donate 10 million meals to families in need throughout 2021, it said.
It’s part of Aldi’s work with food redistribution scheme Neighbourly, which links businesses to charitable organisations in local communities.
Aldi has partnered with Neighbourly since 2019 and all its 950-plus UK stores now donate through the initiative year-round, seven days a week, according to the supermarket.
Lidl also partners with Neighbourly to donate surplus food.
“The festive season is always a hard time for people affected by food poverty, so we are incredibly proud to have supported so many amazing causes over Christmas and new year,” said Mary Dunn, Aldi UK MD of corporate responsibility.
Footballer and campaigner against child food poverty Marcus Rashford said: “It’s great to see that Aldi continues to take steps to support our children though their food donations programme.”
Aldi is one of many big names in grocery to have signed up to Rashford’s Child Food Poverty Taskforce, formed in 2020.
“As a founding member of the Child Food Poverty Taskforce, it’s great to see that Aldi continues to take steps to support our children though their food donations programme,” Rashford added.
“The work of Aldi, and of other members, has been a true lifeline for many and I’m proud to stand alongside them to guarantee we reach as many in need as possible this Christmas. Thank you to all involved.”
