Aldi is offering £10 vouchers in exchange for Christmas puddings bought anywhere, after finding Gen Z and millennials are fed up with the traditional festive dessert.
The discounter polled 2,000 adults who celebrate Christmas and found those aged under 29 were turning their back on traditional festive food, with the classic dried fruit sponge cake among the most disliked.
Of those born in 1996 or later, 78% wanted to make space for plant-based roasts and global-inspired dishes at the dinner table on 25 December.
Over half (54%) wanted to introduce more modern foods like crispy fried chicken, deep-fried halloumi or pizza, and 56% thought brussels sprouts were “dated”.
Some 64% wanted to swap Christmas pudding for an alternative dessert, compared with the 67% of over-65s who said they loved it, according to Aldi.
The supermarket’s ‘Christmas Pudding Exchange Service’ is letting shoppers return a Christmas pudding bought anywhere to donation points in Aldi stores. They can claim their £10 voucher toward an alternative dessert from Aldi by emailing photographic evidence to christmaspuddings@aldi.co.uk, between now and 28 December.
Aldi has suggested alternatives such as its Selected Melting Bombes (£6.49, 335g), Specially Selected Marbled Roulade (£3.99, 425g/445g) and Specially Selected Belgian Chocolate Ganache Pinecones (£3.99, 210g).
“At Aldi, we’re aware that tastes are evolving, so whether you want turkey and all the trimmings or loaded fries and pizza for Christmas, we have something for everyone,” said Aldi UK buying MD Julie Ashfield.
“This Christmas, we’re launching a Christmas Pudding Exchange Service to help customers end their meal with a dessert they love.”
She added: “But don’t worry if you are a Christmas pud lover – we have a fantastic, innovative range this year, including single-serve options for just 89p.”
