Aldi is launching a ’geometric Easter egg’ as part a drive to cut down on plastic packaging.
The eggs have a flat bottom, doing away with the need for a concave plastic insert to support them, and making the packaging plastic-free.
They are among six confectionery lines that have been switched to plastic-free packaging for Easter 2021.
It’s part of a “greener Easter” push that will see two million pieces of plastic – or 29 tonnes – removed from the seasonal confectionery range, said Aldi.
Other steps include replacing plastic windows in boxes with compostable cellulose film made from wood fibres, and a chocolate box using an insert made from recycled potato skins.
“We’re committed to eliminating plastic wherever possible, and the changes to our Easter range are a great example of removing unnecessary plastic that we can all do without,” said Aldi UK plastics and packaging director Richard Gorman.
“We know our customers want to protect the environment, and it is changes like this that make all the difference.”
Aldi has previously committed to making all product packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by the end of 2025.
