Aldi wants local charities, community groups and food banks to sign up for donations of surplus food from stores this Christmas.
The discounter is asking groups to register with its community redistribution partner Neighbourly to receive donations from their local store.
Aldi is working toward a commitment to donate 10 million meals through the partnership this year. With stores set to be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and News Year’s Day, it is embarking on an extra push to prevent food nearing the end of its shelf life going to waste.
Aldi said existing charity partners through Neighbourly would be prioritised, but others could also benefit from “more meals than ever” going to good causes this festive season.
“Our food donations scheme operates year-round, but we know that Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for the families and communities we support,” said Aldi UK MD of corporate responsibility Mary Dunn.
“That’s why we are so committed to increasing the number of meals we donate over the festive season, and we look forward to working with local charities this Christmas to help us meet our 10 million meals target for the year.”
Neighbourly CEO Steve Butterworth said: “With the impact of the pandemic still being felt by communities up and down the country, charities and local causes are expecting record demand for their services this Christmas.
“We’re sure there are lots more groups out there that could put this food to good use, so we’d encourage them to get in touch.”
Interested organisations are asked to email aldichristmas@neighbourly.com before 5 December.
