Aldi has swapped the polystyrene discs in its pizza packaging for 100% recyclable cardboard ones to reduce plastic waste.
The move applies to all Aldi pizza products and will remove a claimed 180 tonnes of plastic from circulation annually.
The discounter is also shrinking the boxes on its thin and crispy range without changing the size of the pizza itself, eliminating a claimed 73 tonnes of cardboard a year.
The new pizza discs are a step towards the supermarket’s pledge, made in March this year, to move to 100% recyclable packaging for all own label by 2022 and across all ranges stocked by 2025, Aldi said.
Do plastic alternatives actually cause more damage?
The supermarket has already swapped black plastic trays for clear recyclable ones on six ranges of fruit & veg and all cooked sliced meats.
“Polystyrene pizza discs are a serial offender when it comes to waste packaging, so it’s important that we tackle this issue directly,” said Fritz Walleczek, Aldi UK’s managing director of corporate responsibility.
“This move is one part of a much larger campaign to reduce our environmental impact wherever possible, be that food waste, packaging or emissions.”
