Aldi has announced plans for a major expansion of its store portfolio in London, promising to open nine new stores in and around the capital this year alone.
The discounter said it would open new stores in Ewell, Enfield, South Norwood, Tooting, Dartford, Ilford, Romford and Coulsdon during 2015, following the opening of the New Malden store in March 2015.
The announcement comes a day after the news that Aldi is now the UK’s sixth biggest supermarket, moving up at the expense of Waitrose.
Latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel show that Aldi has reached 5.3% in market share.
Aldi claimed its success came from reaching new customers and that it had seen a “huge increase” in demand for its premium tier, Specially Selected, with sales of the range increasing by 63.8% in the past 12 months.
It also said its openings would provide a major jobs boost to the capital, with a recruitment drive under way across Greater London to recruit more than 500 store positions. “Our unique ability to offer UK shoppers outstanding quality products at everyday low prices is key to driving our growth,” said Giles Hurley, joint managing director of buying.
“I’m excited that Londoners will soon find it easier than ever to benefit from Aldi’s high quality produce at everyday low prices.”
“Aldi is committed to investing in the UK and Greater London is a key area of growth for the business,” added Tony Baines, fellow joint managing director of buying. “With this will come a significant number of job opportunities for the Greater London area for both our existing and forthcoming stores.”
