Aldi is to donate £1 for every fresh turkey sold this Christmas towards tackling food poverty.
The discounter has pledged £1 to The Neighbourly Foundation for each sale of its fresh whole turkeys or fresh turkey crowns in the run-up to 25 December.
It expects to raise more than £400,000 to help fight food poverty with the initiative.
“We know that for many, food poverty is a stark reality during these difficult times,” said Aldi UK MD of buying Julie Ashfield. “That’s why we’re trying to support the communities in which we operate by providing a £1 donation for every fresh turkey we sell, in a bid to help tackle the issue of hunger.”
Neighbourly CEO Steve Butterworth said: “We are delighted to be working with Aldi in helping them to support communities local to all of their stores across the UK. Their food surplus programme has been going from strength to strength over the past two years, and has provided over seven million meals to people affected by the pandemic since March alone.
“Sadly, local causes and the people they support are facing a difficult winter, and this new scheme to help tackle poverty through donations to The Neighbourly Foundation will make a huge difference.”
Aldi’s 906 UK stores already donate surplus food to charity every day through a partnership with Neighbourly.
The supermarket is also calling on charities, community groups and food banks to register now to receive surplus food donations this Christmas Eve.
Organisations do not need to be a registered charity to apply but must have a level-two hygiene certificate gained in the past two years and be able to transport and store chilled food products after collecting them on Christmas Eve at 5pm.
Interest should be registered by emailing aldichristmas@neighbourly.com before 7 December.
