German discounter Aldi has unveiled the second phase of its £70m investment to redevelop its Atherstone, Warwickshire headquarters to help support its UK expansion programme.
Aldi, which has about 530 UK stores, plans to have 1,000 nationwide by 2021. It opened 42 new outlets last year and wants to open another 54 this year.
Work on Atherstone’s expansion, subject to planning permission, will begin later this year with an envisaged completion date of 2017.
The business has meanwhile bought a lease on another building, Atlantic House, to accommodate the increasing number of staff while the development takes place
“Since Aldi opened its first UK store in 1990, we have established a reputation as an award-winning retailer that offers the highest quality products at everyday low prices,” said Aldi UK joint group MD Matthew Barnes. “This is driving our growth and we are rapidly expanding to meet customer demand.”
Fellow joint group MD Roman Heini added: “In addition to opening new stores, we are making strong investment in our behind the scenes operations. This ensures we can successfully grow, while keeping our customers at the heart of everything we do.”
The latest Kantar Worldpanel data for the 12 weeks to 17 August showed the chain had achieved a market share of 4.8%.
