Aldi has said it will invest £650m in UK expansion next year, opening new stores in locations including Fulham Broadway in London, Billericay in Essex, and Cheadle in Stoke-on-Trent.
The discounter is aiming to add 30 new stores to its estate throughout 2025.
“At Aldi, our unwavering commitment has always been to provide Britain with the best-value groceries,” said Aldi UK & Ireland CEO Giles Hurley.
“The demand for our unbeatable prices is now at an all-time high, which gives us the confidence to continue investing in Britain to provide greater access to our award-winning products at the lowest prices.
“We recognise there are still areas without an Aldi store, so our expansion plans for 2025 are designed to address some of these gaps as we work towards our long-term goal of 1,500 UK stores.”
Aldi also added about 30 new stores to its estate in 2024, in an £800m investment, bringing the current number to 1,044 according to its website.
The store opening programme has been weighted toward the end of the year, with about 20 opened since September including four on 5 December, in Cribbs Causeway in Bristol, Hetton-le-Hole in Tyne and Wear, Ashton-in-Makerfield in Greater Manchester, and Macduff in Banffshire.
On the same day Aldi opened those four, rival Lidl added four new locations to its estate – in Shinfield, Bovey Tracey, Downham Market, and Stirchley – at the same time as opening a relocated branch in Connah’s Quay and a refurbished one in Chessington.
Aldi currently pays store workers a minimum hourly rate of £12.40 nationally or £13.65 within the M25.
