Alpro has added a rice-based alternative to cream to its portfolio of plant-based products.
Alpro Rice Cream will be listed in Tesco, Ocado and Sainsbury’s from 18 June, available in a 250ml carton with a resealable cap (rsp: 85p).
With 97 calories per 100ml, the product was “healthy, light and easy to digest” and gave consumers more choice by offering an alternative to soya and dairy, said Alpro UK senior brand manager Vicky Walsh.
“We’ve got a proven track record of successfully stretching the plant-based drinks category beyond its soya heartland and expect the cream category to respond just as well to more plant-based choices,” she added.
Alpro sales were currently up 14% year up year-on-year in the plant-based category, said Walsh, and the brand was no longer seen as a “free-from brand”.
She added: “We expect our new non-dairy cream to perform well as consumers become increasingly savvier.”
