Amazon is set to create 2,000 permanent UK jobs this year.
New roles will be created across the UK for engineers, software developers, data scientists and cloud and machine learning experts, as well as entry-level positions, Amazon announced today.
The growth will boost Amazon’s UK workforce to 29,500, it said.
More than 170 of the new jobs will be highly skilled positions in Amazon development centres in Cambridge, Edinburgh and London, the company said.
The news was welcomed by Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond.
“Today’s announcement from Amazon is a clear vote of confidence in the British economy,” he said.
“This government is supporting business to create the high-skilled, high-paid jobs of the future, and these roles will benefit people across the UK, including the cities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Manchester and London.
“Thanks to our record investment in infrastructure, skills and research and development, we will continue to lead the technological revolution.”
Amazon UK country manager Doug Gurr said: “We are delighted to be able continue to invest and grow our UK business. The UK is a fantastic hub for global talent and the exciting, innovative work that takes place here benefits Amazon’s customers around the world. Whether you are looking for a highly specialised role at one of our fulfilment centres or in a field such as machine learning or flight engineering, we offer a wide variety of opportunities.”
Work at Amazon’s Cambridge development centre includes Alexa voice technology, while the Edinburgh facility focuses on advertising technology and personalisation. At the London development centre, software engineers and computer programmers work on Amazon’s video service.
The tech giant has invested over £9.3bn in its UK operations since 2010, according to the announcement.
The Grocer revealed in April that Amazon was set to open four new warehouses this July and August, in Bristol, Derby, Chesterfield and Rugby, bringing the UK total to 21.
