The Argos deal will be subject to a drivers’ ballot

Argos delivery drivers have suspended strike action over the Christmas period following successful negotiations over holiday pay.

Unite said it had “hammered out a deal” that it will recommend to members working as Argos delivery drivers, although would not reveal the details.

Acceptance of the deal will be subject to a ballot of members, of which 83% voted to strike over the holiday pay dispute.

The decision follows a meeting this morning with Wincanton, the logistics company that serves the Argos national distribution centre in Barton-under-Needlewood, Staffordshire, and mediated by Acas.

Unite just yesterday threatened to stage a 72-hour walkout of Argos delivery drivers in the run-up to Christmas over Wincanton’s holiday pay policy, which it believed left each driver roughly £700 out of pocket.

According to Unite, Wincanton had failed to take into account overtime and extra shift payments when making calculations for over two years. It refused Wincanton’s previous offer to pay owings from April this year and insisted the deal should cover “at least the last two years”.

“The details of this deal are confidential and we will be balloting our drivers on the offer,” said Unite regional officer Rick Coyle.

“I would like to thank members for the solidarity they have shown during this dispute and we look forward to a positive relationship with the management at Wincanton going forward.”

Wincanton said it was “equally pleased” to reach an agreement and said Christmas Argos deliveries would be unaffected.
