Asda is undertaking a major revamp of its electronics departments in a move that will see it increase floor space and add 495 new lines as part of a strategy to give more space to higher-growth categories.
The refits started last Saturday and are being rolled out to all of Asda’s 568 stores, with work expected to be finished by Monday (8 July).
New lines include TVs, speakers, headphones and smartphone accessories, with a focus on more branded products.
Asda is also hoping to promote complementary products by merchandising them nearby and using its Linksave mechanism, which offers a discount on certain accessories when they are purchased with a TV, for example.
Live product demonstrations would be another new feature, with on-trend products such as sound bars, tablets and Bluetooth speakers a particular focus, said the retailer.
The new products would also be available online, it added.
“This is the biggest change in electronics within Asda for a number of years,” said Asda electronics project manager Jamie Serrano. “The scale of the work is significant with introduction of live display models across all areas and our aim being to make the shopping experience as easy and pleasurable as possible for our customers.”
Asda said electricals were a high-growth area. However, last month Tesco chief executive Philip Clarke partly blamed falling electrical sales for the retailer’s 1% drop in first quarter like-for-like sales in the three months to 25 May.
