Asda said the fleet would free up traditional vans to concentrate on delivering to homes
Asda has introduced a fleet of electric vehicles in a bid to boost its online capacity.
The supermarket has purchased nearly 50 of the vehicles, which will be used to ferry orders from stores to click & collect points.
It said the use of the fleet would allow more traditional online vans to be freed up to concentrate on delivering to homes.
The move sees these stores able to collectively increase the number of potential click & collect slots they are able to offer from over 7,000 per week to more than 34,000.
Fully road legal, the vehicles can travel up to 40 miles on a charge.
The supermarket also has seven additional hybrid vehicles in use, to assist in stores where they will be required to travel longer distances to click & collect lockers.
“We are always looking for ways to innovate in areas where customers care,” said Emma Ford, senior director of operations development for online grocery at Asda.
