Asda has stopped selling monkfish in its stores because it is concerned about the overfishing of monkfish stocks.
“Our customers expect us to do everything we can to protect fish stocks, so we've decided to ban monkfish sales as a precaution until the industry takes appropriate action to ensure its long-term survival,” said Chris Brown, head of ethical sourcing at Asda.
The move comes as Japan and the European Union agreed to cut their annual tuna catch by almost a quarter to protect tuna stocks.
Meanwhile, Asda is also planning to remove all packaging from most fresh produce at two stores in north west England in a trial next week, according to reports in the Independent.
