Asda has warned it would consider defying plans by the Scottish government to crack down on cheap alcohol.
There was nothing to stop it and other supermarkets from building warehouses in northern England and selling cheap alcohol online, the retailer told the Daily Telegraph.
“There is nothing to stop companies looking at expanding their home shopping network or opening up depots just south of the border and delivering to homes in Scotland,” said Rob Chester, head of licensing at Asda.
The Scottish Government revealed plans earlier this month to tackle binge drinking by banning cheap drink promotions, setting minimum prices for alcohol and raising the limit to buy alcohol from 18 to 21 in the off-trade.
