Asda distribution workers have voted to go on a three-day strike next week over pay issues.
Two thirds of GMB members at the Washington distribution centre voted to take strike action from Wednesday, July 27, after rejecting Asda’s pay offer. Some 400 staff will now walk out.
GMB organiser Mark Wilson said: “GMB members have clearly demonstrated - by the level of the vote for strike action - that they are not satisfied with what the company has offered. My advice to the company is to get back to the negotiation table and sort out a deal with the members.” However, an Asda spokesman said the company understood that only a third of the workforce had voted in favour of the strike action, adding that the pay deal of 7.75% over two years, backdated to January, was “a great offer”. “We’re disappointed, but we’ve already put contingency plans in place - customers won’t notice a thing.”
Meanwhile, Morrisons still faces the threat of an all-out strike at its distribution centres. Union members across England and Scotland are unhappy with Morrisons’ final pay offer of 3.2%. The T&G and GMB are demanding national pay negotiations after the breakdown of regional talks.
