Asda has been fined £225,000 after a customer was killed by a car park barrier crashing into his car.
Kenneth Farr, 37, suffered fatal head injuries when the unsecured steel barrier was blown into his windscreen by a gust of wind in May 2002.
Following an inquest verdict of unlawful killing, Asda admitted two charges brought by Cardiff Council under the Health and Safety at Work Act. Asda said it had installed the barrier to stop the car park being used by skateboarders and bikers. However, although it should have been secured by a padlock, it was swinging free on the day of the death.
Asda has since removed similar barriers.
